Three separate concepts

An actual holiday is the statutory civil date. Its observed date can move for a work schedule. A cultural observance can be important for planning without being a nationwide federal closure. Only observed federal closures are deducted from the federal business-day count.

Federal weekday observations

For fixed-date US federal holidays, a Saturday holiday is ordinarily observed on Friday and a Sunday holiday on Monday for the conventional Monday–Friday schedule. Holidays defined by a Monday or Thursday rule already fall on a weekday. Employer schedules and other workweeks can differ. The holiday table shows both dates and deduplicates closures that share a date.

Cultural and national observances

Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May and Father’s Day the third Sunday in June under Title 36. Valentine’s Day is February 14, St. Patrick’s Day March 17 and Halloween October 31. These selected US observances are shown separately and do not automatically reduce federal business-day counts.

US scope and New York time

These lists cover nationwide US federal holidays. New York is the reference clock for today and time tools; it does not turn a federal holiday list into a state, school, bank or employer closure calendar. Enter those closures separately.

Sources and corrections

Recurring US federal rules use OPM. National observance rules use the US Code; cultural date references use the Library of Congress. Official source links and jurisdiction appear with the relevant dataset. Use Report a Calendar Error to prepare a precise correction with page and date details.
